The 5th UNWTO Conference on Tourism Statistics (2009-04-06)

Professor Haiyan Song, principle investigator of this forecasting project was invited by the United Nation's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to speak on tourism statistics and forecasting at the 5th UNWTO Conference on Tourism Statistics held on 30 March - 2 April in Bali, Indonesia. In his speech, Professor Song introduced the Web-based tourism demand forecasting system and its use in business decision and policy-makings.

Objectives

This website presents the forecasting outputs of the project, which includes quarterly forecasts of tourist arrivals, expenditures, and sectoral demand related to Hong Kong's inbound and outbound tourism flows. It allows users to conduct scenario analyses on forecasting by manipulating the input variables.

How To Use this Site

  • The Main Menu on the left hand of each page represents the following:

    • Forecasting Methods - If you wish to familiarize yourself with general forecasting methods, you should start with this link. It describes the forecasting methods and shows how they are related to one another. The forecasting methods used in this website are also discussed here.

    • Tourism Forecasts - If you are interested in the research outputs on Hong Kong tourism forecasts, please start with this link. For non-subscribing users, only annual forecasts of tourist arrivals can be viewed. Subscribing users will be able to view all the quarterly forecasts in terms of figures and graphs as well as the explanations and discussions of the results.

    • Scenario Analysis - If you wish to conduct scenario analysis on Hong Kong tourism forecasts of tourist arrivals, expenditures, sectoral demand and outbound flows, you should start with this link. However, only subscribing users will be able to use this service.

    • Forecasting Adjustment - This link provides judgmental forecasts on Hong Kong tourism of tourist arrivals, expenditures, sectoral demand and outbound flows.

    • Glossary - Defines key words or phrases used in this website.
